Context & Strategic Rationale
Africa is the world's youngest continent — and its givers are already at work.
African youths are organising mutual aid networks, building civic technology, and mobilising neighbourhood resources long before institutional funding arrives. Yet youth-led organisations receive less than 0.5% of global philanthropic funding, and the African diaspora — which transfers over $100 billion to the continent annually — remains largely disconnected from structured, community-rooted giving on the continent.

Three structural failures sustain this gap
- 1
The ecosystems that could nurture youth-led giving are fragmented: young givers operate in isolation, invisible to funders and to each other.
- 2
The narratives that govern philanthropy remain dominated by external actors and formal institutions that systematically under-value indigenous and informal expressions of generosity.
- 3
There is no standing continental convening platform where young philanthropists can organise collectively, develop shared agendas, and celebrate each other's impact.
Why now?
Youth philanthropy efforts are fragmented and operating in silos — an opportunity to connect those on the ground and celebrate them.
This year marks the 10th anniversary of the African Union Youth Charter commitment to youth civic participation, an opportunity for AYPN to anchor the festival in a continental accountability moment.
Post-pandemic mutual aid movements across Africa showed the depth and speed of youth-led generosity. This momentum needs infrastructure before it dissipates.
Diaspora philanthropy is at an inflection point: second-generation African diaspora in the UK, US, Canada, and France are increasingly seeking structured channels to invest in the continent.
